It Just Came to Me

The way to tell if you are in a world war is submarines. If they bring out the submarines, you know you've arrived. Think about it. I don't think they used one submarine through the whole Cold War. Take that Mr. Gingrich.

My impression is that, during the cold war, submarines were a major concern, perhaps even playing a greater role than they did in the first and second world wars.

At least they sailed around alot. I'm sure your right about that they didn't really shoot much, but, then, neither did most of the airplanes and riflemen that were running around the whole time.

Instead, I believe the cold war is not considerred to be a world war due to the fact that it did not involve enough combat to qualify as any kind of war at all.

Well proponents of the "Cold War as World War" theory say that the war part of the Cold War was millitary engagements in Vietnam, Grenada, Afghanistan and East Timor, among others.

Lots of airplanes and rifles were used in these wars, but no submarines were (to my knowledge). Hence, these little wars in no way qualify as part of a world war.
